*The festival information below is for the 2026 festival, and information for the 2027 festival is currently being updated.* Held in Hwacheon, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is a unique winter festival named by CNN in 2011 as one of the “Seven Wonders of Winter.” The festival takes place every January, when the famously clear Hwacheoncheon Stream freezes solid, offering visitors the chance to catch sancheoneo, known as the queen of the mountain streams, through activities such as ice fishing and catching fish with bare hands. Visitors can enjoy the thrill of catching sancheoneo through ice fishing and eat their catch fresh as sashimi or grilled. In addition to fishing, a variety of winter activities, including ice sledding, snow sledding, and bobsledding, are available, attracting more than one million visitors each year.
